** 1. About Akintes
*****************************************************************

Akintes is a robust tank combat action game that uses the
keyboard and mouse to control a tank on a 640 x 480 scrolling
battlefield. The player commands the tank through a battlefield
of enemy tanks and cannon turrets to find and destroy an
enemy helicopter. The game plot, while simple, demonstrates
the commercial quality of the game engine. The game combines
smooth scrolling, fast refresh, and responsive action from the
controls with a large playing field to create the foundations
for a complete and challenging game.

ShipSea Software is selling copies of the C source code for the
Akintes program to serve as educational examples for programmers
to learn how to turn their ideas into products. The source code
is moderately priced and easily available.

*****************************************************************
** 2. Installing Akintes
*****************************************************************

Akintes is distributed as a compressed 'zip' file.

Windows installation will require a copy of WinZip.

Dos installation will require a copy of PkUnzip.

You ** must ** unzip the program into its original directory
structure. WinZip will do this automatically. Dos users of
PkUnzip must use the -d flag to unzip into subdirectories.

Ex: a:>pkunzip -d akintes.zip

If the zip unzips correctly, you will find a subdirectory
called 'Art' in the directory with the Akintes program.
This directory will contain all the art for the game.

*****************************************************************
** 3. Running Akintes
*****************************************************************

DOS Users
1)	Load the mouse driver
2)	Change to the directory where you are storing Akintes
3)	Type "akintes"

Windows Users
1)	Open the directory folder that stores Akintes
2)	Double click on the Akintes.exe icon

You will need to use both the arrow keys and the mouse to play
AKINTES.

UP ARROW - Move Tank Forward
DOWN ARROW - Move Tank Backward
LEFT ARROW - Steer Tank Left
RIGHT ARROW - Steer Tank Right

MOUSE - Aim Tank Turret
LEFT BUTTON - Fire Machine Gun
RIGHT BUTTON - Fire Main Cannon

The main cannon must be reloaded by your crew after each
round. The green crosshairs indicate the main gun is
loaded and ready to fire.

ESC - Exit Game

The best defense is a strong offence. Move fast and keep
shooting.

*****************************************************************
** 4. 99% of the problems......
*****************************************************************

99% of the problems reported in testing were caused by two
errors.

1) The mouse driver was not loaded.

2) The program was not unzipped into its original subdirectory
structure. You must use the -d flag in DOS to correctly
    unzip the program.

Any additional problems that show up after the game ships will
be posted on the web page at http://www.shipsea.com.

*****************************************************************
** 5. What is source code ?
** How will it teach me to write games?
** What can I do with the source code in my games?
*****************************************************************

How many times in school did you look at the answers in the back
of the book?

Akintes is a chance for you to look how someone else programmed
their game.

When you register Akintes, you will receive a copy of the source
code for the program for you to use as a programming example.
As a programmer, you can look at this program to see how the
game was created.

You may see new tricks, or you may learn areas where you need
to strengthen your programming skills, and you may discover
that you have a new way to write the code. These are all steps
in learning to become a great game programmer.

There are times where more than an example is needed, and you
may want to use a portion of the code directly. In that case,
contact us. Just as we give SciTech credit for using their
routines, we would like credit when our routines are used
in other programs. We are very easy to work with.

We realize that there are only so many ways to do some things,
such as scanning a keyboard. These aren't the routines we
are worried about. Our goal in releasing the source code was
to sell a learning tool so individuals could spend more time
creating the cool parts to their game, and less time
working on problems that have already been solved a hundred
times. We hope that the code is used to this end, rather than
to spawn "Son of Akintes" and "Akluntes" titles using this
engine with new art.

** 7. Akintes Cheat Codes
*****************************************************************

These aren't really cheat codes, they are more like debugging
aids.

First one : Akintes is programmed to run at 30 frames per
second. If you would like to see the unlimited speed on your
system, type "akintes asdf" to run the program. When you exit
the program, you will see a frames (fps - frames per second)
count on the screen

Second one : You can back the tank over terrain. The helicopter
is on the screen immediately below the starting point of the
game. This was done to facilitate testing of the transitions
at the end of the game.

*****************************************************************
** 8. Product Updates

*****************************************************************

Users of Akintes must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"Akintes is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
consequential, which may result from the use of Akintes."

Akintes is a "sourceware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program
interesting and would like a copy of the source code for
educational use, you may register Akintes with ShipSea Software,
Inc. The registration fee of US$79.95 will license one copy
of the source code for use on any one computer at any one time.
You must treat this source code just like a book. An example is
that this source code may be used by any number of people and may
be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long
as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while
it's being used at another, just as a book cannot be read by two
different people at the same time.

Anyone distributing Akintes for any kind of remuneration must
first contact ShipSea Software, Inc. at the address below
for authorization.
